Text Neck | Highland Park, Il
Did you know that excessive screen time can mess up your posture? When you’re on your devices, you may tend to slouch down and your head leans forward. This leads to what we know as “text neck syndrome,” and it affects over 58 percent of adults who use devices such as laptops, smartphones, tablets, and computers.
It’s a pretty safe bet to say you spend some time in front of a screen, whether it be your smartphone, laptop, tablet, or even the TV. The average time we spend per day on smartphones alone is 2 hours 51 minutes. If you’re on your iPhone now, go ahead and look in your settings to check out your own daily average screen time; it’ll probably shock you.
Take your screen time from your smartphone and add to the time you spend on other devices. If you’re like many people currently working from home on a computer or tablet, you’ll find that you’re spending most of your day in front of a screen. And eventually, this can lead to text neck.
How Do You Know If You Have This Problem?
If you find yourself spending hours a day on these devices, you may notice yourself having some of these text neck symptoms:
- Stressed shoulders
- Neck pain
- Numbness and tingling in your arms
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Lower back pain
Text neck pain is real and shouldn’t be brushed off as “just an annoyance”. These symptoms are your body’s way of crying out for help. To find out for sure, you’ll need to be assessed by someone who specializes in the spine, such as a corrective chiropractor. You can also get a free digital text neck checkup to get you started if you sign up for our 5-day Text Neck Challenge.
What is Text Neck?
From a side view, your spine should have a 40-degree neck curve. But text neck happens when your head leans forward and your torso goes back, causing an improper alignment of your spine, and lessening this curve over time.
The misalignment that’s causing your symptoms can be caused by overuse or improper use of technology, including smartphones (hence, text neck).
If you’ve ever heard of anterior head carriage, anterior head syndrome, or turtle neck posture, they’re all the same thing.
How to Fix Text Neck
You can’t fix your spine on your own, but there are things you can do to get you started.
Since text neck symptoms stem from the way you use your devices, the first thing you can do is to correct the way you’re using them. If you have poor posture at work, you need to know how to set up your desk the right way to change your posture. There’s also a proper way to use laptops, tablets, and smartphones to prevent your head from leaning forward, messing up your posture. Dr. Gregg Gerstin, here at Align Wellness Center, has made some YouTube videos with clear instructions on how to use your devices. If you join the 5-day Text Neck Challenge, you’ll be given daily emails with videos and resources to help you get started.
You can change the way you use technology and that’s a start. Unfortunately, you can’t correct text neck on your own, even with corrective exercises for text neck or anterior head carriage.
In order to fix text neck, you’ll have to find out exactly where the problem is stemming from, and that’s done by a posture analysis. A corrective chiropractor who specializes in Chiropractic BioPhysics (like Dr. Gregg) can assess you to find out where you have misalignments and work to not only give you relief from your symptoms but also fix the problem so they don’t return.
Chiropractors that specialize in Chiropractic BioPhysics do more than offer adjustments for pain relief. They use biology, physiology, physics, geometry, and anatomy to diagnose and treat you based on science.
When you come in you’ll get a thorough assessment, including x-rays to see what’s going on inside. When the source of your problem is determined, you’ll get a personalized program for you with regular adjustments, exercises tailored to your needs, and spinal remodeling using traction devices to correct the curve you began to lose due to text neck. You may even be given exercises and treatments to do at home between appointments.
Chiropractic BioPhysics has been scientifically proven to work, even on text neck.
