Poor posture has become one of the most frequently occurring concerns related to spinal health in modern society. You might not even realize that over a period of several years you have begun to slip into poor posture. If you do, you may recognize that you’re starting to hunch forward a little more, that your clothes are beginning to fit a little differently, and that you don’t seem to be as tall as you used to be.

Your friends and relatives may be advising you more and more often to sit up straight or to stand more erect. These kinds of situations are very common with people who are developing poor posture, and to a great extent, it’s attributable to the lifestyles which we have all adopted in today’s society. Many people have sedentary lifestyles which call for sitting at a desk for long periods of time over a number of years.

This also includes working on computers, tablets, and smartphones, which frequently call for you to be hunched over and staring at a monitor. Given the fact that poor posture and hyperkyphosis are so prevalent in our modern society, it would definitely be worth your while to come in for a consultation at the Align Wellness Center, so that you can be treated for Northbrook posture and hyperkyphosis.

Good Posture

We must measure it before we can treat it

Posture refers to the way that our spinal cord supports our body when we are sitting or standing, and it’s measured both from the front and the side. From directly in front, the head should be centered over the rib cage and the shoulders, and should not be tilted, rotated, or shifted to either side. The shoulders and the rib cage should be directly centered above the pelvis and the hips, and neither shoulder should be higher than the other, nor should they be shifted to one side or the other.

In a good posture situation, the hips would ideally be centered over the feet. From the side or sagittal view, the ear should be situated directly above the shoulder, and the shoulder should be in line with the hips, which in turn are directly centered over the ankles. When you have good posture and good spinal alignment, you’ll be able to have maximum energy efficiency, while also reducing the cumulative effect of gravity and other forces on your muscles, ligaments, and joints.

Hyperkyphosis

What is it and why should I care?

This is a medical condition which refers to unusual and excessive rounding associated with the upper part of the spine. A number of studies have been conducted which conclusively demonstrate that hyperkyphosis has a direct bearing on neck pain, back pain, disability, headaches, and even a person’s self-esteem. The same body of research has also determined that elderly patients afflicted with hyperkyphosis can expect to have a shorter lifespan compared to similarly-aged patients who don’t have hyperkyphosis.

This condition affects somewhere between 20% and 40% of the total population, but is most commonly associated with elderly individuals. There is no single cause for hyperkyphosis, although some factors which can lead to it are degenerative spinal changes, muscular weakness, vertebral compression fractures, and poor posture.

The alarming thing about this is that hyperkyphosis has now become much more prevalent in younger populations because of the modern sedentary lifestyle, and the age of technology which has affected almost everyone. When you come into the Align Wellness Center, we can use various spinal rehabilitation programs to effectively reduce kyphosis and improve your spinal biomechanics. In some cases, we will use spinal traction, therapeutic exercises, and spinal adjustments, all to bring about better spinal alignment and better posture.

At Align Wellness Center, we offer chiropractic care, cold laser therapy, disc compression therapy, sciatica treatment, and so much more to relieve pain, restore spinal function, and restore structural integrity. Also, we offer wellness programs for those who are seeking to remain healthy in the long run.

Questions ? You're Covered

What is hyperkyphosis?

Hyperkyphosis is an excessive forward curvature of the upper spine, often leading to a hunched posture. While common in older adults, it’s becoming more frequent in younger individuals due to prolonged sitting and device use.

Signs may include rounded shoulders, a forward head position, persistent neck or back pain, fatigue when standing upright, or noticing a reduction in your height over time. A postural assessment at Align Wellness Center can help confirm any spinal misalignment or postural issues.

Yes, over time poor posture can lead to chronic pain, muscle fatigue, restricted mobility, spinal degeneration, and even respiratory issues. It also puts unnecessary stress on joints, ligaments, and discs—leading to long-term complications if left untreated.

Chiropractic care can significantly improve posture by correcting spinal misalignments, relieving pressure on nerves, and strengthening the muscles that support the spine. We combine adjustments with tailored exercises and sometimes spinal traction to create lasting improvement.

Treatment plans may include:

  • Gentle chiropractic adjustments

  • Spinal traction

  • Postural corrective exercises

  • Soft tissue therapy

  • Cold laser therapy (if nerve or inflammation support is needed)

In many cases, yes—especially when caught early. With a structured rehab program and chiropractic support, we can reduce the curvature and improve your posture, function, and quality of life.
