The sciatic nerve is the largest single nerve in your entire body, extending from your lower back all the way down to your feet. It actually consists of five smaller nerve systems which are joined together, but which fork below your lower back, so they can extend down into both legs, and eventually to reach even your feet and toes.

Anytime the sciatic nerve gets irritated or pinched, you’ll probably notice it as a tingling sensation in one or the other leg, and you may also recognize some weakness in that particular leg. Patients who undergo sciatic nerve pain generally sense it as a burning or shooting pain which can at times be localized, and at other times which can travel all throughout the lower back, down into the extremities.

The area where people most commonly feel sciatic nerve pain is in the pelvic region and in the lower back, since these are the areas where pressure will most often be exerted on the sciatic nerve. If you feel sciatic nerve pain in the leg, it will generally be in only one leg at a time and not both. Many patients feel sciatic nerve pain whether they’re standing, sitting, walking or even reclining in bed.

If you would like to have your sciatic nerve pain relieved completely, or at least substantially dissipated, you should come visit your Northbrook sciatica chiropractor at the Align Wellness Center. We have treated many sciatic nerve patients in the past, and we’ve had excellent results with helping them obtain relief so they can resume their normal daily activities.

Sciatica Treatment

Treating sciatic nerve pain

While sciatic nerve pain may seem excruciating at times, there is good news about the likelihood of success in treating it. Most sciatic nerve pain can be significantly reduced or eliminated without having to undergo surgery, and there is rarely any permanent damage which occurs as a result of sciatic nerve pain. When you come to us at the Align Wellness Center, we will diagnose the underlying cause of your sciatic nerve pain, because there are many possible locations in the body where pressure might be exerted on nervous tissue.

Once we’ve isolated the source of your sciatic nerve pain, we will formulate a program of treatment with you, so that this pain and discomfort can be relieved. At the same time, we will educate you so that you will be able to avoid any repetition of the sciatica, and so you will be able to embark on a healthier lifestyle. We will customize a program of treatment to your specific needs and issues, and afterward you can enjoy life again in a pain-free lifestyle.

At Align Wellness Center, we offer chiropractic care, cold laser therapy, disc compression therapy, sciatica treatment, and so much more to relieve pain, restore spinal function, and restore structural integrity. Questions ? You're Covered

What is sciatica?

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips, buttocks, and down each leg. It’s typically caused by pressure or irritation of the nerve, often due to spinal misalignment, disc herniation, or inflammation.

Symptoms may include:

  • Sharp, shooting, or burning pain (often in one leg)

  • Numbness or tingling down the leg

  • Muscle weakness

  • Pain that worsens with sitting, standing, or certain movements

  • Discomfort that radiates from the lower back to the calf, foot, or toes

Common causes include:

  • Herniated or bulging discs

  • Degenerative disc disease

  • Pregnancy or postural changes

  • Muscle strain or imbalance

  • Spinal misalignment

  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction

  • Spondylolisthesis or other spinal conditions

Our team performs a thorough assessment to determine your exact cause before designing a care plan.

  • Realign the spine and pelvis

  • Reduce inflammation and restore mobility

In most cases, no. The majority of sciatica cases respond well to conservative care. Surgery is rarely necessary unless there’s severe nerve damage or spinal instability.

In addition to chiropractic care, we may include:

  • Cold laser therapy for inflammation

  • Disc decompression therapy to relieve disc pressure

  • Targeted exercises to strengthen core muscles

  • Postural correction and lifestyle guidance to prevent recurrence

Yes. By correcting spinal misalignments, improving posture, strengthening supporting muscles, and learning proper movement habits, you can reduce the risk of future flare-ups. We’ll guide you every step of the way.
